New AFL2 Team Takes a Look at Kicker Travis Baird '03

January 23, 2007

January 23, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - "Travis Baird, 26, opened his own motorcycle shop in Elkhart about three years ago. The entrepreneur and (2003) DePauw University graduate considers himself a soccer and rugby player," reports Indiana's Fort Wayne News-Sentinel on tryouts for the Fort Wayne Fusion, the city’s startup Arena Football League 2 team. Baird, an economics major who played soccer at DePauw, was one of 12 kickers who tried out for the Fusion. "It could have been better," he tells the newspaper.

Ryan Lengerich writes that Baird was vying for "the chance to kick in his hometown at the professional level... Last year he kicked for the Michiana Titans of the Mid States Football League. He was listed at 5 feet, 10 inches and 225 pounds -- rugby size. Hisshop sponsored the team."

The writer, who also auditioned for the kicking job as part of his story, reports, "I pushed East College Wide Snow 2005.jpgtwo 30-yard field goals to the right. Baird pulled me aside. I needed to straighten out my line to the ball on my approach, he said. I was starting too far left, causing my plant foot to be pointed right -- or something like that." He adds, "Baird didn’t expect a call back from the Fusion. 'I didn’t do well,' he said, laughing, after the tryout."
