Tigers top Union in Port Charlotte Invitational

March 28, 2007, Port Charlotte, Fla. - DePauw jumped out to a 4-0 lead with three in the first and one in the second and never trailed on the way to a 9-3 win over Union (N.Y.) at the Port Charlotte Invitational. DePauw improved to 11-10, while Union dropped to 1-7.

The Tigers drew six walks in the opening frame and plated three runs and Matt Kleine delivered an RBI triple in the second to make it 4-0.

Following Paul Mene's run-scoring single in the second put the Dutchmen on the board, DePauw added one in the third on Eric Reese's infield single.

Brendan Smith's sacrifice fly in the sixth extended the lead to 6-1, while Justin Weiner's RBI single made it 7-1.

Brian Hurley's run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth and Matt Wentworth's sacrifice fly cut the lead to 7-3, but DePauw added one each in the seventh and eighth innings on RBI singles from Jack Gavin and Mike Stout, respectively.

DePauw totaled eight hits with Reese leading the way with three. Weiner and Gavin each drove in a pair in the win. Mene and Hurley each totaled two of Union's seven hits.

Matt Westernkirchner improved to 1-0 with the win, while John Tschantz picked up his first save. Josh McKelligan dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

The two teams face each other on Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m.
