Jeremy Rafal.jpgApril 12, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - Sa Mahal na Birhen Maria by Jeremy A.C. Rafal, a 2000 graduate of DePauw University, is the first place "Sacred Art Song" in the 2007 Sacred Voice competition. The contest is administered by Vocal Works, a Utah-based producing organization directed by composer/vocalist M. Ryan Taylor and sponsored by the American Fork Arts Council.

In its inaugural year, the competition received more than thirty submissions from around the world. Eleven finalists in two categories -- Sacred Song Cycle and Sacred Art Song -- were chosen by a panel of preliminary judges adjudicating from among the following criteria: sensitivity to text, originality, beauty, and comprehensible form. The songs were performed last weekend and two audiences determined the winners. The preliminary judges were: Sarah Thomas, editor of Classical Singer magazine; vocalist Brian ManternachDePauw Logo White.jpg (Ph.D. vocal performance, Indiana University); and Mr. Taylor.

Jeremy Rafal was a music performance major at DePauw
