Tigers Keep Monon Bell with Strong Effort, 24-8 Victory

November 15, 1958

58 Monon Butch Colin.jpgNovember 15, 1958, Crawfordsville, Ind. - The Tigers ended a disappointing season on a strong note today, defeating arch rival Wabash College 24-8 in the annual battle for the Monon Bell. The victory gives DePauw a 2-7 mark for the season, while the host Little Giants fall to 3-6.

DePauw's Butch Colin ran for the game's first score and senior fullback George Mestousis carried the ball 29 times for 132 yards. The triumph means the railroad bell will remain in Greencastle -- where it's resided since 1955 -- for another year.

A "Monon Memory" of the game -- written, produced and narrated by Ken Owen '82 -- utilizes vintage photos to tell the game story. Access it here: Video Link [Download Video: "1958 Monon Memory" - 2620kb]; it's also embedded below. You'll find a complete roster of Monon Memories by clicking here.
