"The Waltman-Sturgeon tandem dates back to Sturgeon's playing days at DePauw University. The pair brought the Tigers to the NCAA Division III championship game." Sturgeon is a 1988 graduate of DePauw University; Waltman was the Tigers' head men's basketball coach from 1987-1992.

Sturgeon played under Waltman at DePauw for one season.  For the next four years, he assisted the coach, a period where the Tigers posted an 82-29 (.739) record. "When Waltman landed the head job at UIndy, Sturgeon followed as his assistant, helping the Hounds to an 89-49 (.645) mark in five seasons and two NCAA Division II Royce Waltman.jpgtournament berths."

For the past ten seasons, Waltman was head coach at Indiana State University. Sturgeon is 138-113 (.550) in nine years at UIndy.
