100 Injured When Bleachers Collapse at Football Game

November 1, 1913

new york times.gifNovember 1, 1913, Greencastle, Ind. - "One hundred persons, most of them women, were hurt, eight seriously, when the bleachers on [the] DePauw University athletic field collapsed just before the DePauw-Rose Polytechnic football game this afternoon," reports the New York Times. "Members of both football squads did good work in disentangling mass of lumber and humanity. The swaying of the crowd, in cheering the DePauw team as it came on the field, is believed to have been the immediate cause of the accident."

The newspaper's account estimates there were approximately 700 people in the stands when the incident occurred. The game was played and DePauw won, 14-7.
