Tigers score 28 straight in second half for 38-17 win

September 1, 2001, Greencastle, Ind. - Trailing 17-10 at halftime, the Tigers roared back with 28 second-half points for a 38-17 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win over visiting Rhodes College.

DePauw fell behind 7-0 just 18 seconds into the game as Hays Mathis returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.

Ben Murray booted a 38-yard field goal with 6:08 left in the first to cut the Lynx lead to 7-3. Rhodes kicker Andy English matched that with a 46-yard field goal with 14:48 left in the second, before DePauw knotted the score at 10-10 on a 17-yard pass play from Jason Lee to Dan Ryan with 11:34 left in the first half.

Rhodes took advantage of a DePauw fumbled punt return and drove 21 yards in six plays with quarterback Gary Rockne scoring on a seven-yard run with 6:25 left in the half to put the Lynx ahead, 17-10.

John Stephens returned a punt 67 yards for a score with 11:35 left in the third, but the extra-point kick was blocked and Rhodes held a 17-16 lead. They took that lead into the fourth quarter, but the Tigers erupted for 22 points in a span of just 3:03.

Stephens scored on a eight-yard pass from Lee with 13:00 left in the game and Ryan caught the two-point conversion pass from Lee to give the Tigers a 24-17 lead.

On the first play of DePauw's next series, Lee teamed with Rondell Ferguson for a 77-yard score with 10:52 left. Murray converted the point-after to make it 31-17. DePauw linebacker Jason Geringer rounded out the scoring just three plays into Rhodes' next series as he picked off Gary Rockne's pass at the 25-yard line and ran in for the score.

Lee completed 34 of 52 passes for 426 yards and three touchdowns with 13 of those going to Stephens for 140 yards. Andy Tolle hauled in nine for 84 yards and Ryan added seven for 88 yards. Ferguson finished with 91 yards on three receptions. Matt King picked up 62 rushing yards on six carries. 

Rockne rushed for 74 yards and completed 13 of 33 for 118 yards to lead Rhodes. Matt Dement caught four passes for 50 yards.

Geringer recorded 16 tackles including two for loss. John Christophersen, Mike Laszyinski and Alson Jacquet each were in on 10 stops. Justin Tillis had three pass breakups and David Blackburn added two. DePauw's defense finished with five sacks including 1.5 by Micah Lukens.

Tal Goldsby and Jeffrey Smiley totaled nine tackles each for Rhodes

DePauw totaled 469 yards of offense to Rhodes' 271 and held a 25-19 advantage in first downs.

The Tigers travel to Hanover on September 8, while Rhodes hosts Maryville (Tenn.).

GAME NOTES: Lee's 426 passing yards were the second highest total by a DePauw quarterback (Lee had 486 against Hope in 2000 ... Stephens' 13 receptions were the third most in a game in school history. Jay True grabbed 16 against Butler in 1978 and Joe Schoen had 14 against Wabash last year.
