Newspaper Names Kevin Lenz '89 'Coach of the Year'
June 27, 2008
June 27, 2008, Greencastle, Ind. - Kevin Lenz, varsity baseball coach at Indiana's Whiting High School and 1989 graduate of DePauw University, is the Times of Northwest Indiana "Coach of the Year." Lenz led Whiting to a 20-11 record this spring as the school "broke through to win its first sectional and regional and come one victory shy of the state championship game," writes Jim Peters.
The article notes how Lenz keeps detailed statistics of his team's performance over the years. "Part of the reason I go back to 1971 is to show what Whiting has been, what we're looking at as far as what we're building on," he says. "Part of it's also to show what we've done the last couple years and what we're capable of."
A mathematics major, Lenz played basketball and baseball at DePauw, earning five varsity letters and appearing in two NCAA Division III basketball tournaments. He's previously been Whiting's head boy's basketball coach, and also led the basketball program at Indiana University-Northwest. Lenz has also served as an assistant hoops coach at Calumet College of St. Joseph.
