Senior Assists Director on Production of Kiss Me, Kate

June 24, 2009

June 24, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — DePauw University senior Natalie R. Dreyer is serving as an assistant to the director of the Summerfly musical theatre production of Kiss Me, Kate, reports the South Bend Tribune. Summerfly productions, which are staged by the South Bend Community School Corporation, provide opportunities for 7th graders through graduating seniors to perform in an all-student production.

Irena Zajickova writes, "Kiss Me, Kate, a 1948 Cole Porter musical, is actually a play within a play. It is set in the 1940s and the cast plays a group of actors putting on a production of William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. As the actors attempt to stage their play, love triangles develop and misunderstandings lead to confusion, both backstage and on the Shakespearean set."

The newspaper notes that Dreyer has been working " to teach the cast what Shakespeare’s words meant."

The production opens tonight.
