Carrie Newcomer to Perform Free Concert at DePauw Nature Park, August 29

August 3, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — Acclaimed national recording artist Carrie Newcomer will perform a free concert in the amphitheatre of the DePauw University Nature Park on Saturday, August 29. The 7 p.m. set by Newcomer will be preceded by a  6 p.m. performance by local songwriter Anthony Mullis. The program is presented by DePauw's Performing Arts Series.

"Carrie Newcomer is much more than a musician," according to bestselling author and 1977 DePauw University graduate Barbara Kingsolver. "She's a poet, storyteller, snake charmer, good neighbor, friend and lover, minister of the wide-eyed gospel of hope and grace."

Newcomer has recorded eleven albums for the folk label Rounder Records, the most recent of which, The Geography of Light, was praised by the Boston Globe's Scott Alarik as being her "prettiest and wisest" CD to date. The Geography of Light was named by Folkwax as 2008's "Album of the Year" and the magazine named Newcomer its "Artist of the Year."

According to Mary Chapin Carpenter, Newcomer's latest album is "full of gorgeous arrangements that frame her soulful vocals."

On Sunday, August 30, Newcomer will also lead a songwriting workshop from noon until 3 p.m. in the Reflection Center at the Nature Park. The workshop is free but registration is required by e-mailing rdye@depauw.edu.

The August 29 concert is free and open to the public; there will be no tickets or reservations. Attendees are encouraged to make use of the Nature Park earlier in the day to hike or picnic. Visitors are also encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets as seats in the amphitheatre are limited. Patrons should be advised that there is a short walk of about five minutes from the Nature Park's main parking lot (off of the 1400 West Walnut Street entrance) to the amphitheatre. A shuttle cart will be available to persons unable to walk the distance.

The Nature Park also offers a very limited number of primitive campsites within walking distance of the amphitheatre. Registration is required for overnight camping.
