"Old Flame" of Coach Dick Tomey '60 Noted in Newspaper Story

September 14, 2009

Dick Tomey Stanford2(2).jpgSeptember 14, 2009, Greencastle, Ind. — Dick Tomey, head football coach at San Jose State University and 1960 graduate of DePauw, is noted in an article in today's Arizona Daily Star on Mike Stoops, head football coach at the University of Arizona, a positiion previously held by Tomey. Stoops will have a homecoming this weekend when his team plays at Iowa's Kinnick Stadium, where Stoops starred as a college player.

"Most coaches don't have to endure a test against an old flame," writes Greg Hansen. "Tucson is new to this coach-meets-alma mater business because Dick Tomey didn't schedule DePauw, his old school, because the Tigers were engaged with Sewanee and Millsaps and especially hated Wabash."

You'll find the full story at the newspaper's Web site.

Dick Tomey ranks fourth among active college football coaches in victories (only Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden and Mack Brown have more). He is the current president of the American Football Coaches Association and was inducted into the new Michigan City High School Football Hall of Fame on July 20.
