10th-ranked Butler Tops DePauw in Exhibition

November 1, 2009, Indianapolis, Ind. — Division I's 10th-ranked Butler University scored the game's first 12 points and handed DePauw a 77-45 exhibition game loss at Hinkle Fieldhouse.
The Bulldogs' 12-0 run came in the opening four minutes of the contest before Tony James knocked in a pair of free throws. DePauw's first field goal came on Jarrett Hamilton's bucket with 8:49 left in the half.
Butler pushed the margin to 38 at 67-29 in the second half before Kevin Sullivan nailed a pair of threes and two free throws and Bergfeld scored on a layup to cap a 10-2 run.
Sullivan, Bergfeld and Hamilton each scored eight for the Tigers. Shelvin Mack paced Butler with 13, while Gordon Hayward added 11 and Andrew Smith followed with 10.
Butler shot 50 percent from the floor, while the Tigers connected on 27.5 percent. The Bulldogs knocked down 10-of-23 threes to DePauw's 4-of-14. Butler held a 43-29 advantage on the boards and blocked nine shots.
Tonight's game was also a matchup of Butler head coach Brad Stevens '99 against his college coach and current DePauw head coach Bill Fenlon. Stevens was a four-year letterman for the Tigers from 1995-99.
DePauw opens regular season play on Friday, November 20, when it faces Bluffton at the Albion College Tipoff Tournament.
