Lucien Berry cr.jpgJuly 23, 1858, Greencastle, Ind. — The Reverend Lucien W. Berry, the second president of Indiana Asbury who led the University from 1849 to 1854, died today in Cincinnati, Ohio.  He was 43 years old.

Born in Vermont in 1815, Rev. Berry grew up in Ohio and attended Miami University. He held influential pastorates in Knightstown and Indianapolis. He had been on the Asbury board of trustees since 1842, and was elected president in  1849. Though his presidency began well, he later encountered town-gown conflicts as well as political and religious rivalry, and resigned in 1854.

After leaving Greencastle, he served as a pastor in New Albany, Indiana, and served two years as president of Iowa Wesleyan University.
