Bob Wells '66 Honored for His Volunteer Service

October 31, 2011

102998October 31, 2011, Greencastle, Ind. — Robert F. Wells, a 1966 graduate of DePauw and a member of the University's Board of Trustees, is the recipient of the 2011 Helen Gratz Rockefeller Outstanding Volunteerism Award. Presented by Family Centers -- a private, nonprofit organization offering education and human services to children, adults and families in Fairfield County, Connecticut -- the award is the agency's highest honor for volunteer service.

Wells has been a member of the Family Centers’ board of directors since 2000 and "has left a mark on nearly every aspect of the organization," notes an announcement. "Wells, a former advertising executive, helped to solidify Family Centers’ communications plan and was a driving force behind the increased visibility the agency has enjoyed in recent years. He also led numerous speaker trainings, and taught Family Centers’ staff how to 'tell their stories' in the community. And as a member of The Blue Flames -- a touring steel drum band -- Wells has raised thousands of dollars to help families in need."

"When you think of a hands-on volunteer, Bob Wells immediately comes to mind," says Laurie Host, chairman of Family Centers’ board. 5287"For the past 11 years, he has immersed himself in the Family Centers culture and made a lasting impression. Whether he’s playing his steel drum for much-needed funds or offering insight on how to better serve our clients, Family Centers is always at the top of his priority list."

"For me, helping others is what I need to do," Bob Wells said in a 2007 Norwalk Advocate profile. "Too many are blind to the pervasive problems of people in our area living on the margins. You don't see these people at the clubs we belong to, the restaurants we eat at, the fine stores where we shop. But the problems are real. They are all around us. We just need to open our eyes."
