January 5, 2013

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw committed just seven turnovers and held visiting Hiram to just 37 percent second-half shooting and held on for a 65-59 North Coast Athletic Conference victory at Neal Fieldhouse.

The Tigers improved to 8-5 overall and 1-3 in NCAC play, while the Terriers dropped to 7-6 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

Hiram held the lead, early, before Michael Wilkison's three with 12:17 left in the first half gave DePauw a 13-12 advantage. The Terriers briefly regained the lead on Tom Herchek's jumper, but Camron Burns hit a pair of free throws and Barry Flynn added a bucket to put DePauw ahead, 17-14.

DePauw's lead reached as many as five at 24-19 before the guests knotted the score at 26-26 on Matt Roman's jumper. Tommy Fernitz nailed two free throws with five seconds remaining to send the Tigers to a 28-26 halftime cushion. Hiram shot 60 percent from the floor, but committed 12 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes which DePauw turned into 11 points.

Connor Rich knocked down a three and Flynn a jumper to push the Tigers' lead to seven in the opening two minutes of the second half. DePauw was unable to pull away and the Terriers were still within three at 45-42 after Alan Sheppard's bucket with 8:25 left.

DePauw's Pat Haggin came right back with a trey before snagging a defensive rebound on the other end. Flynn's bucket expanded the lead to eight and Jeff Sustarsic's layup after a Hiram turnover made it 52-42 with 5:59 remaining. On the Tigers' next trip down the court, Rich's bucket extended the lead to 12.

Hiram narrowed the margin to six with just under two minutes left, but DePauw hit six free throws in the final 35 seconds to seal the win.

"I thought our defensive concentration was a lot better (than Friday night)," DePauw head coach Bill Fenlon said. "We were tighter with our communication and execution, especially on defense."

Rich paced DePauw with 15 points with Flynn and Fernitz each scoring 14. Fernitz also led the Tigers with six rebounds and Adam Botts had four assists.

Hiram's Sheppard led all scorers with 17 with Aaron Stefanov and Steve Zivoder each adding 10. Zivoder hauled down a game-high 10 rebounds for a double-double and Justin Wisniewski dished out seven assists.

DePauw hosts Wabash at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 9, while Hiram entertains Wooster on the same evening.
