Tigers Pick up Sunday Sweep; Split Opening Weekend

Memphis, Tenn. - After dropping the opening two games on Saturday at the Softball Showcase of Hope to Benefit St. Jude, DePauw came back to sweep the same two schools and even its record at 2-2 after the opening weekend of the 2013 season.

The Tigers defeated host Rhodes, 6-3 and topped Wisconsin-Platteville, 5-2.

DePauw fell behind in the Rhodes contest as the Lynx scored one in the third, but the Tigers quickly countered as Lauren Krumweie scored when Haleigh Chasteen reached on an error. Rhodes regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Chloe Hundman drew a bases loaded walk.

DePauw then knotted the score in the fifth when Catherine Conte doubled home Sammi Bell and blew the game open in the sixth with four runs. Megan Landahl's bases loaded single scored Amy Hallett and Gwen Anderson's single followed by an error on the play cleared the bases and gave the Tigers a 6-2 lead. Rhodes added one more in the seventh on a sacrifice fly.

Hallett led DePauw with two of its seven hits, while Chasteen picked up her first collegiate win in the circle after allowing just two earned runs in the complete game.

Against Wisconsin-Platteville, DePauw did all of its damage in the third as Gwen Anderson and Samantha Szyska each reached on errors and Jennifer Ridge singled to load the bases. Sammi Bell delivered a two-run double before Hallett followed with a double that scored Ridge. Emily Dieckmann's sacrifice fly plated Bell and Chasteen singled home Hallett to give the Tigers a 5-0 lead.

The Pioneers scored their two runs in the fourth when Cassadra Bonin doubled home Taylor Ruchti and later scored on an error.

Ridge and Chasteen each had two of DePauw's eight hits. Becca Lowe totaled two of UW-Platteville's five. Bichler evened her record at 1-1 after allowing just one earned run and five hits in the complete game.

DePauw returns to action Friday, March 8, when it competes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga,.
