Tigers Drop Game Three and Series at Allegheny

Meadville, Pa. - DePauw gave up three unearned runs in the second inning and Allegheny came away with a 5-3 win over the Tigers in the third and deciding game of the North Coast Athletic Conference cross-over series.

DePauw finished the season at 17-23 and 9-10 in NCAC play, while Allegheny improved to 24-14 overall and 11-7 in the conference. With the series win, the Gators clinched one of the four spots for this week's conference tournament.

Allegheny scored three in the second inning as Mike Pezzone and Frank Tirozzi each singled before Ben Kirchler reached on a two-out error to load the bases. Kyle Davis followed with a single to left center that scored all three runners.

The Tigers countered with two in the fifth as J.B. McCallum was hit by a pitch and scored on Paul Mpistolarides' double down the right field line. Zach Galyean's two-bagger plated Mpistolarides and cut the Gators' lead to 3-2.

Kirchler reached on a DePauw error to start the seventh. moved to second on Davis' sacrifice bunt and to third on Zach Gray's ground out. Joe Killiams followed with a single that scored Kirchler.

The Gators added an insurance run in the ninth as Kirchler singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Gray brought home Kirchler with a single up the middle to make it 5-2.

In the DePauw ninth, Ryan Allee led off with a single and McCallum walked. Mpistolarides singled with one out to load the bases. Galyean grounded out to the pitcher, but Allee scored on the play to cut the lead to 5-3. Pezzone recorded a strikeout for the game's last out.

DePauw totaled eight hits with Mpistolarides leading the way with three and Galyean adding two. The Gators finished with 10 hits and were paced by Triozzi with three. Gray and Killian had two apiece.

Jack Peck suffered the loss for the Tigers and dropped to 2-6. Allegheny starter Brandon Ellis went five innings and improved to 6-2, while Pezzone notched his third save.
