Kal Penn's DePauw Commencement Speech Noted in Times of India

June 2, 2014

A story in today's Times of India recaps commencement speeches at Harvard Law School last week by Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and Vera Chokalingam, better known as the actress Mindy Kaling. Chidanand Rajghatta writes, "Several other Indian-Americans featured in this year's list of commencement speakers, including Mastercard CEO Ajay Banga at NYU's Stern School of Business, the analyst Fareed Zakaria at Sarah Lawrence College, physician Atul Gawande at University of North Carolina, and the actor Kal Penn (Kalpen Mody) at DePauw University."

Kal Penn, who also served as associate director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, addressed DePauw's Class of 2014 on May 18.  "Realize that no one owes you anything, and that hard things are hard," he told the 506 new graduates. "Be motivated, but don't worry unnecessarily. And try to understand the difference between those two things."

A summary of Penn's remarks can be found here; video of his speech is embedded below.

A DVD capturing the 2014 commencement ceremony and an array of special features has been produced and should begin shipping later this week. Learn more about the project and order the disc using this online form.
