Prof. Jeff McCall '76 & His Former Student Susan Dinkel '95 Discuss Viewer Discretion Advised in Live TV Interview

June 25, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - "The average American citizen doesn't know enough about how the media operate," Jeffrey M. McCall, professor of communication at DePauw University and author of Viewer Discretion Advised: Taking Control of Mass Media Influences told Terre Haute's WTHI-TV today. "Therefore, they need more what I call media literacy so that they can understand more about how the media operate, because I think people need to know."

Dr. McCall was interviewed live during the CBS affiliate's mid-day newscast by anchor and news director Susie Dinkel, a 1995 graduate of DePauw who took classes from the media studies professo.  "Folks at home, he's one of the reasons I got into this business in the first place," Dinkel said at the beginning of the segment, which is embedded below.

Viewer Discretion Advised was published last month and Professor McCall discussed it live May 24 on Champaign, Illinois McCall Book Viewer Discretion.jpgCBS affiliate WCIA-TV's morning news program with Anne Ewald Dill '99, who introduced Dr. McCall as "my former college adviser." He also visited with Dick Johnson '76 on Chicago's WLS-TV on June 4.

A 1976 graduate of DePauw and a former journalist, Jeff McCall's columns on media matters have been published in a number of newspapers. He is a widely quoted media observer and critic, having been interviewed and quoted by over 75 newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, Newsday, Christian Science Monitor, and others, and he has also made a number of appearances on radio and television shows.
