Bret Baier '92 Recalls DePauw Golfing Days at Pro-Am in Florida

December 19, 2016

"Usually, Bret Baier of Fox News tries to not sway too much in any direction," reports Florida's Naples Daily News. "But when Baier traded in his anchor desk for the greens and fairways at the Tiburon Golf Club at The Ritz-Carlton in North Naples (on December 7), he had a case of the 'lefts.' 'Well, I tell you it seems like a long time ago today,' Baier said, referring to his days playing golf at DePauw University. 'Yesterday was more like it, but today was a little shaky.'" Baier, a 1992 DePauw graduate, quipped, "The fair and balanced center -- I was trying to find it all day long."

He was in Naples to play in the Pro-Am Wednesday before the Franklin Templeton Shootout. (at left: Baier meeting with DePauw student journalists in 2013)

The anchor of Special Report says the outcome of the presidential election suggests his network and others need to pay more attention to what people in the country are thinking. "We should do more of sitting in diners in Middle America and talking to people and the more that we do that I think the better positioned we are. Polls tell you one thing. But people and feelings tell you a different thing.”

An English (composition) and political science double major at DePauw and captain of the Tiger golf team, Baier was among the first students to work in the then-new Center for Contemporary Media.  While a DePauw student, he interned with Bernard Shaw at CNN and landed his first professional job at WJWJ-TV (PBS) in Beaufort, South Carolina.  He also worked at WREX (NBC) in Rockford, Illinois, and WRAL (CBS) in Raleigh, North Carolina, before joining Fox.

Baier authored the 2014 book, Special Heart: A Journey of Faith, Hope, Courage and Love. His next book, Three Days in January: Dwight Eisenhower's Final Mission, will be published January 10.

Baier returned to DePauw for Old Gold Weekend  in 2013 and spoke as part of the Timothy and Sharon Ubben Lecture Series and received the University's Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award. The talk is summarized here; video is embedded below.
