Monon Bell is "Larger-Than-Life Small-School Rivalry"
November 9, 2018
"No. 20 Wabash (8-1) will host DePauw (4-5) at 1:07 p.m. [Eastern time] Saturday in the 125th Monon Bell, a larger-than-life small-school rivalry which will be televised on Fox Sports Indiana," notes an Evansville Courier & Press preview of tomorrow's game. "While we may have only a passing interest in the rivalry here in Southwestern Indiana, the Monon Bell’s colorful and historic past is well worth reflection," writes Gordon Engelhardt.
Wabash, located in Crawfordsville, Indiana, is just 27 miles up U.S. 231 from DePauw, located in Greencastle. The Little Giants lead the series, 61-54-9. They play for possession of Monon Bell (pronounced MOE-non), a 300-pound locomotive bell from the Monon Railroad, which the Wabash and DePauw players would ride to the game way back in the day. The hit 1904 play, The College Widow, and its subsequent film adaptations, were loosely based on the rivalry. The Monon Bell was introduced as a traveling trophy in 1932."
The article recaps some of the famous Bell thefts, including the 1965 incident recapped in the "Monon Memory" posted below.
Engelhardt notes, "You get the idea. It's fun and a little bit nuts – all the makings of a good rivalry. There was even a song written about it, [The Ballad of the Monon Bell] written in 1985 by Jim Ibbotson, a member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (famous for Mr. Bojangles) and a 1969 DePauw graduate." (at right: the cover of the sheet music for the rivalry's ditty; Ibbotson sang on and arranged the song's recording -- it was actually written by Nancy Ford '57 and Darel Lindquist '68)
