Message from the Vice President Regarding Web Updates

Dear Faculty and Staff,
I write with an update on our ongoing efforts to improve the University’s website. As many of you know, we have been working alongside an agency, Dartlet, to create a more dynamic, accessible and navigable space. Prospective students and their families are the primary target audience for our website, and current students, alumni, faculty, staff and community members will continue to be important constituents.
On November 1, 2017, you will see the first of many changes to our site when the homepage and other top-tier pages get a fresh look in Phase I of the website rollout. These are pages that prospective students and their families are likely to land on as they discover DePauw.
Web transitions take time, ongoing feedback and continued monitoring of visitor analytics. To keep you informed, we have created a Web Updates Blog where you can track our progress and provide suggestions.
Throughout the next few months, the Communications and Marketing division and DePauw’s web team will be meeting with many of you to discuss content unique to your areas of the website. In preparation for those meetings, and to ensure updates to your sites can be completed efficiently, we ask that you work with your web author(s) to:
1) Make sure your content is accurate, and
2) Remove any content that is outdated. This will require evaluating resources that are no longer useful or relevant. If you have PDFs or photographs that need to be removed, please fill out the Request BigTree Resource Removal form.
For accessibility purposes, it is especially important that we migrate away from the use of PDFs and Word documents in favor of HTML content built into the pages. Accessible PDFs can be created, but require external resources. Videos should be closed-captioned and photos given alternate text.
Our hope is that we will be able to do more storytelling about the good work happening across the University and the great people – faculty, staff and students – who make it happen. Also, we will continue to make changes to the homepage and other areas of the website based on our analytics. During this transitional time, you can find many common resources linked in the gateway pages at the top right of the new homepage (Faculty/Staff; Current Students; Alumni).
