Wellness Advocate Program

Each year Counseling Services seeks to hire four DePauw students to be part of our Wellness Advocate Program. Below is an overview of what the Wellness Advocate Program is about and how to apply for one of our positions.

Specifics regarding these positions:

  • One full academic year commitment (August-May)

  • Paid opportunity for 5 hours per week (1 hour weekly meeting, 2 hours outreach prep time, 2 hours outreach)

Duties of the Wellness Advocate:

  • Provide outreach programming on mental health topics to the campus community.

  • Foster personal and professional development among the Wellness Advocate Team by promoting the development of leadership skills through training, program planning and program implementation designed to reach students across a variety of backgrounds and traditions with important physical health and psycho-educational information.

  • Present or co-present several programs with or without a Counseling Services staff member and/or other Wellness Advocate during the academic year (i.e., fall and spring semesters).

  • Refine existing programs and/or establish new programs as decided by Counseling Services and/or the Wellness Advocate Team.

  • Learn information related to a variety of mental health concerns related to college students.

  • Learn or improve public speaking skills and will learn how to manage a small audience.

  • Learn different presentation styles and ways to adjust your personal speaking style to accommodate the different demands of those presentation styles.

  • Learn the importance of collaboration within a university environment and be able to plan and/or present programs to various university stakeholders across campus.

Timeline:

  • Attend a training session in late spring (i.e., prior to the starting your assignment as a member of the Wellness Advocate Team) and early in the fall semester (i.e., once your assignment as a Wellness Advocate starts) to become familiar with Counseling Services staff members, the services that we provided and various programs that we offer.

  • That time will also be used to begin the learning process of the different types of programs that we have offered in the past, would like to start offering, and will also provide a time for us to learn about your ideas regarding what types of programs you believe our students might benefit from in the future.

  • Wellness Advocates will begin outreach programming upon return in the Fall semester. The same applies for return after Winter Term.
