The Jane and David Stone First Year Civic Leadership Program

A group of university students lying in a circle with their heads pointed towards the center. They are lying down on the ground in the dark, stargazing. Everyone is smiling.

The Jane and David Stone First Year Civic Leadership Program seeks to build relationships among students interested in community service and connect them with others who have similar interests, academic pursuits, and professional goals during the course of their first year at DePauw. Over the course of their first year, Jane and David Stone Scholars will promote community service, social justice, philanthropy and civic engagement, through the following activities:

  • Completing 1 hour of community service per week with a Putnam County partner each semester during the student's first year.

  • Assisting partners in completing projects, including service and extending mini grants if requested.

  • Participating in a mandatory service-learning trip with their Stone Scholar cohort. The location of the service-learning trip will be announced to cohort members by September 1, 2023 at no additional cost.

  • Attending bi-monthly leadership development meetings, opportunities, and cohort bonding activities.

  • Planning the annual campus-wide Supermarket Sweep event, in conjunction with Hartman Center staff. For more information on the Supermarket Sweep, click on here to be redirected to our Service Events page!

Upon completion of the Jane and David Stone First Year Civic Leadership Program’s requirements for each semester, students will receive a small stipend.

Hear From Our Stone Scholars

“I think that incoming freshmen should want to be a part of the Stone Scholars Program, because this program helps you become a part of something bigger than yourself. The Stone Scholars Program has helped me expand from the "DePauw bubble" and connect with the Greencastle community. Connecting with a community, especially when you are living in one that is not your own, is extremely important. The Stone Scholars program also reminds me why I am here at DePauw, which is to help and serve others in my career path! It allows me to grow in an "others-focused" mindset and to grow through volunteering/serving in the community.”

“The Stone Scholar Program is a great way to get involved with community service both on and off campus. It encourages you to do community service regularly and gives you the opportunity to connect with other first-years passionate about service."

“My favorite part of this program is that it utilizes a service format where I become closer with both my cohort-mates and the Greencastle community through community service. I've never come to know a small group of people so quickly, nor have I ever found a place in a larger community so quickly.”

“The Stone Scholar Program is an amazing opportunity to get to know other DePauw students who are civilly engaged and want to better their community while meeting people in Greencastle who want the same things. It has given me a greater appreciation for both the campus and the town. I have met people through this program that I know I will keep connected with throughout my whole time here at DePauw.”
