Terrell Moore ’14 rallies alumni mentors for NYC area students

Terrell Moore headshotTerrell Moore ’14 recalls fondly his collaboration with fellow DePauw students and faculty and staff members to address the dynamics of inequality.

The political science major and Posse scholar considers his work on the “Power, Privilege and Diversity” graduation requirement to be one of his most important experiences at DePauw. Students are required to take one course related to analyzing the interplay of power and privilege in human interactions; such courses frequently focus on the experience of non-dominant members of political or social groups.

“As a team, we merged ideas, proposed policies, and learned from those who lobbied -- years before -- for the changes we sought,” Moore says. “There were frustrating and euphoric moments at the start, the peak, and conclusion of our work. It is encouraging to hear that students, staff, and faculty remain engaged in solving today’s challenges.”

While a student, Moore worked as a tour guide and intern in the Office of Admission, experiences that have been integral to his career in educational admission counseling and executive recruitment. “I enjoyed contributing to DePauw’s recruitment efforts. It inspired me to a career in higher education in undergraduate and graduate admissions. Since then, recruiting exceptional talent has been my passion. The opportunity to partner with Fortune 500 companies to secure executive talent is a dream come true. It all started with a campus tour and a love for my alma mater,” he says.

Lifelong friendships and alumni connections make every high and low point meaningful in the transition to life after graduation.

Moore has remained involved with DePauw, alumni and students in a variety of ways. He has contributed financially to support the university’s Inclusive Excellence Initiative and The Fund for DePauw through the Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) Challenge. “Giving to my alma mater allows me to continue the legacy of alumni support that makes DePauw strong,” he said. “Many have graduated before my class and have given back in ways that enhanced our education, expanded our interests and supported our paths to success. The future of higher education rests on the love and generosity of our alumni.”

Moore also has been a class reunion volunteer and a member of the New York Regional Alumni Association, for which he helped establish a mentor program that matches regional alumni with incoming and current students from the Greater New York area. “In concert with DePauw’s Gold Commitment, alumni mentors support students in securing internships and post-graduate opportunities. Students benefit from connecting with with local alumni who can guide them on their paths to success,” Moore says. Eventually he hopes to work with other New York area alumni to establish a scholarship at DePauw for a New York students.

He says he volunteers and gives in honor of the alumni, staff and faculty who challenged and supported him during his DePauw years. “Lifelong friendships and alumni connections make every high and low point meaningful in the transition to life after graduation,” Moore says. “When I was lived in a new city, with no established ties, DePauw alumni welcomed me. It made my transition easier and with less anxiety. Volunteering with the New York Regional Alumni Association has been a rewarding experience to reconnect with home base for fellow Tigers.”
