Philosophy
Studying Philosophy at DePauw
Analyze ideas. Develop arguments. Solve problems. Confront life’s most enduring questions. Philosophy invites you to do all these things and more, resulting in a wealth of intellectual, personal and professional benefits. Regardless of your background or your career ambitions, philosophy can sharpen your reasoning skills and make you a more effective problem-solver and communicator. From law and business to social work and education, this ancient discipline continues to be highly relevant for today’s most prolific thinkers and leaders.
A major or minor in philosophy includes courses that cover history, methodology and the numerous subdisciplines such as metaphysics, epistemology, ethics and logic. Through all of these courses you’ll gain a thorough understanding of not only how philosophy has shaped the past, but also how it continues to influence contemporary thought. You can also pair your on-campus learning with a semester abroad or with participation on DePauw’s highly accomplished ethics bowl team to learn in new environments and enhance your educational journey.
