317A: Advanced Entertainment Design: From Screen to Stage

Stories have moved between the playhouse theater and the movie theater for as long as the latter has existed. Animation is often used in movies and television to achieve things that are impossible for the human body to achieve, but how do we translate the magic of animation onto the stage? In this course, we will examine and discuss how costume, lighting, and scenic design are utilized to bring the audience into the world of the story in stage adaptations of 4 animated films - Frozen, Shrek, The Lion King, and Spirited Away. Students will also select an individual animated work to practice their own ideas for turning the impossibilities achieved via animation into possibilities onstage.
