All first-year students, and students living in university-owned housing, are required to have a meal plan, which gives a student access to meals at Hoover dining hall or to-go options at the C-store. Both provide a variety of dining options, along with vegetarian and halal options by request. Freshmen are automatically enrolled in a meal plan that includes 18 swipes and $200 flex or 14 swipes and $400. Sophomores and upper-class students living in other housing, may purchase smaller meal plans and cook for themselves at their residences. Additionally, many restaurants are a short walk from DePauw’s campus.
Greencastle has many walking-distance grocery stores and restaurants. Putnam County has created a guide of all its dining options, including those in Greencastle. You may also use the local bus system, Rural Transit, or rent a bike from International Student Affairs. See the transportation page for more.
In the U.S., food servers and taxi drivers are paid a lower minimum wage than other workers because it is expected that customers will “tip” them extra money. It is recommended to tip 15-20% in addition to the cost of your meal or ride. Food order delivery drivers must be tipped as well.
