DePauw stood out with alumni engagement and opportunities like the internship program

In the Swim of Things

When I started my college search, I wasn’t 100 percent settled on a path. I had enjoyed economics in high school, and as I compared DePauw’s Management Fellows Program to business or management programs at other schools, DePauw stood out — especially with its alumni engagement and opportunities like the junior-year internship.

Management Fellows also sounded flexible — you didn’t have to be a particular major to get into it.

Intro to Management Fellows

My dad, John Marshall ’93, introduced me to the program. We did some research and came for a visit. We met with Dr. Jeff Gropp and Sarah Miller, and they really sold me on it.

Professor Gropp is now my adviser. I’m grateful for that relationship — I know that anytime I stop by the McDermond Center, I’ll learn something from a conversation with him.

The alumni network is also a huge plus. Mike Sherman ’88 is my alumni mentor. His career path is my “Plan A.” I love what he’s done in life sciences and how he’s provided legitimate value. I admire that.

Greek Life

Moving from a dorm to a fraternity was an adjustment, for sure — but a good one. Going back to the house after getting my butt kicked in practice beats going back to my dorm, where I didn’t know if anyone would even be around.

As a first-year, I was elected vice president of Sigma Chi. I oversaw the house committees and served as head of risk management — probably one of the most important responsibilities in the chapter.

I also rode for Sigma Chi in the Little 5 my first and second year. As soon as swim season ends, I’m on the bike — and recruiting new riders along the way.

Swimming

I knew I wanted to swim in college. I wanted a small liberal arts school, and I loved the coaches at DePauw.

Tracy Menzel took over the swim program around the time I got here. I really like her a lot.
