DePauw University reports economic impact

A comprehensive economic impact study shows that DePauw University generated $69.5 million in economic impact for Putnam County during fiscal year 2023-24, supporting one out of every 17 jobs in the county and representing 5.4% of the county's total economic output. This report, conducted in partnership with Lightcast, provides metrics that support advocacy in public funding, grant opportunities and other initiatives. It also demonstrates the university’s ability to create value in multiple ways and affirms its vital role as an economic anchor in Putnam County.
“Since our founding, DePauw has been deeply woven into the economic and social fabric of Greencastle and Putnam County,” said President, Dr. Lori S. White. “Together, we build a more vibrant local economy and a stronger community. Our commitment to supporting local jobs, driving innovation, and creating new opportunities is stronger than ever.”
During the university’s 2023-24 fiscal year, DePauw generated $69.5 million in operations spending impact, with 572 people directly employed by the university. Additionally, the report cites $2.0 million in student spending impact, $1.9 million in visitor spending impact and $4.3 million in alumni impact. In total, this represents a $78.5 million impact on Putnam County and supports 1,009 jobs, including those employed directly by the university and those supported as a result of university operations and spending by students, visitors and alumni.
Looking ahead, DePauw’s economic impact continues to be promising. The Bold & Gold 2027 strategic plan, with capital projects such as Growing Green and Gold Together, Seminary Square mixed-use residential/commercial project and student housing renovation projects, will contribute more than $200 million in capital and construction spending to the economy over the next five years.
