Film studies student wins scholarship to study abroad
Reyna Wilson ’22 will study in South Africa next fall as the recipient of a scholarship from the Fund for Education Abroad.
If Covid-19 does not stand in her way, the rising DePauw junior will spend mid-September through early December in an internship with a Cape Town television station.
“I’m very excited about this because I’ll be able to get more hands-on experience at the station and apply the skills I’ve learned in class to my internship rather than be an intern who runs everyone their coffee,” she said via email.
The Fund for Education Abroad provides scholarships for students who are underrepresented in the U.S. study abroad population, such as students of color and first-generation college students.
The scholarship “lifts a huge weight off of my shoulders,” Wilson said. “Many people are unable to study abroad because of the cost and the FEA gave me the opportunity to do so without financial burden.”
The internship supports the film studies major’s goal of “gaining as much experience in a variety of areas so that I can narrow down what I am really passionate about.” She hopes to work in the entertainment industry and “ultimately I think I would want to be a director of either TV shows or films, but I also have other interests, such as editing, music director and possibly even a TV show host.”
