Application Form

Purpose: A Fisher Time-Out is reassigned time from one course or its equivalent in a given semester in order for a colleague to complete a professional project, either for teaching or scholarly/artistic work (10-12 hours per week for a whole semester). Fisher Time-Outs now may be used for reassigned time for the preparation of a complete proposal for a significant external grant or fellowship. The Fisher Time-Out applicant should have identified the grant or fellowship he or she aims to apply for, showing that there is an appropriate deadline and that he or she is a plausible candidate for the grant, and should also describe in some detail the work (writing, research, grant workshops, etc.) that will be undertaken during the period of the Fisher Time-Out that would justify the corresponding re-assigned time (10-12 hours per week for a full semester). We suggest further that the application should identify one or more appropriate mentors, at DePauw or elsewhere, who have agreed to assist. At least six time-outs will be granted in an academic year

Eligibility: All tenure-track or tenured members of the faculty are eligible to apply each year. In addition, untenured faculty members on multi-year (2 or more years) and renewable term appointments who have completed a successful third-year review are eligible to apply for one time-out. Faculty members are not eligible for a Fisher Time-Out during the same academic year as a sabbatical or pre-tenure leave. See section on "Faculty Eligibility and Categories for Funding" for more details.

Expectations & Rules:

  • Faculty members may only receive one award every 2 years for a Fisher Time-out.
  • This award may not be held concurrently or in conjunction with other major awards such as fully-funded faculty chairs, University Professorships, Distinguished Professorships, a Fisher Fellowship, or a Faculty Fellowship.
  • Faculty members considering projects that involve technology should consult with Faculty Instructional Technology Support (FITS) at least two weeks prior to the application deadline.
  • Applications for projects for course development should include a letter of support from the department chair.

Reporting Process: A report is to be submitted to the FDC for fall projects - by the first Monday of the following spring semester, and for spring projects - by the first Monday of the following fall semester. See Report Guidelines for Awards for further information.
