Cinema on the Square Opens Its Doors to DePauw, Greencastle Communities
DePauw University and the City of Greencastle cut the ribbon on its new movie theatre, a versatile downtown hub for entertainment, education and community connection. The newly opened Cinema on the Square is the result of a collaborative partnership between city and university leaders as part of the Growing Green and Gold Together initiative.
The venue, located at 6 E. Washington St., sits adjacent to the downtown Starbucks and features social space, event space, premium seating and a large screen creating a must-see atmosphere for local moviegoers. As Greencastle’s permanent home for first-run films, Cinema on the Square represents a significant investment in the city’s future and a monumental step forward in its ongoing downtown revitalization efforts.
“What the cinema means to Greencastle cannot be overstated,” said Greencastle mayor Linda Dunbar. “It is more than just a place to watch movies. It's a community gathering space. It's a place where families make memories, where students and residents come together, where downtown feels alive in the evening and where our community shares stories together on the big screen.”
In addition to its role as a community entertainment space, Cinema on the Square also establishes an anchor point for DePauw’s film and media arts program. Its unique resources and strategic proximity to campus open up a wealth of opportunities for DePauw students, faculty and staff.
Marcus Hayes, dean of the Creative School at DePauw, said, “Not only will the Cinema on the Square serve as another entertainment venue for Greencastle residents and DePauw students, but on the nights when first-run movies are not being shown it will also be used as a teaching space for screening films associated with all DePauw departments and programs. I am excited about the opportunity to extend the programming offered by the Creative School into the Greencastle Community through both the Cinema on the Square and Music on the Square locations.”
The opening of Cinema on the Square underscores DePauw’s commitment to an innovative liberal arts education as delivered through its three-school framework. The dual-purpose model provides unique outlets for creative expression and cultural engagement, while bringing together campus life with broader community interactions.
