183A: Geology of New Zealand (off-campus)
A geologic field trip through both islands of New Zealand. New Zealand boasts a wide variety of geologic features within a very small geographic region, and is thus an ideal location for students of geoscience to examine active geologic processes that they learn about in the classroom. Students will get hands-on experience examining geysers, active volcanoes, caves, glaciers, active faults, rising mountains, and much more. Although the theme of this course is the geologic development of the islands (with an emphasis on geologic history and tectonics), we will also have opportunity to touch on the island's unique biologic diversity, climate zones, and native Maori culture.
