GEOS Speaker - Dr. Tim Davis '84

October 5, 2012

Wilkerson, Soster, Davis, daughter

Dr. Tim Davis '84 returned to DePauw for Old Gold Weekend to speak to the Department of Geosciences (and to give his daughter Audrey an opportunity to visit DePauw and see what we have to offer!).  Tim, who majored in Geology while here at DePauw, is now currently Senior Geosciences Advisor for Apache Corporation in Houston, TX.  Prior to that, after receiving his Ph.D. at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1992, Tim worked with the North Carolina Geological Survey, Exxon Production Research, and Occidental Petroleum Corporation.

Tim gave an excellent presentation on "Frontier Exploration of the Kenyan Continental Margin", showing the faculty and students how his team integrated structural geology, plate tectonics, sequence stratigraphy, geophysics, and geochemistry to develop a petroleum systems model for a very geological complex area off the eastern coast of Africa.  In addition, Tim shared his personal perspectives about the many opportunities available in the petroleum industry to current geo-majors and how they can best prepare for such a career through coursework and research while at DePauw.
