The School of Music offers several degree options so students can tailor their education to match their level of interest and career goals. All students receive careful and close advising from faculty members in order to choose the program that best suits their needs.
Bachelor of Music (B.M.)
The Bachelor of Music is ideal for the student who wishes to pursue music as a career. The B.M. is the most common professional degree in music and the most music-intensive of all options, with approximately two-thirds of all coursework in music and one-third in liberal arts courses. With careful planning, students in the B.M. program may also complete a second major in a liberal arts discipline or add an emphasis in business.
Bachelor of Music Education (B.M.E.)
The Bachelor of Music Education is designed for students who wish to become certified music teachers. The program meets requirements for P-12 teaching certification in Indiana. Two options are available: an instrumental/general music emphasis and a vocal/general music emphasis.
Bachelor of Musical Arts (B.M.A.)
The Bachelor of Musical Arts is an interdisciplinary music degree that combines musical studies with a secondary area of emphasis. Three tracks are available: for the general music emphasis, students individually design an interdisciplinary liberal arts component; the second option combines the music emphasis with another major in a liberal arts discipline; and the emphasis in business combines the music curriculum with career-related elective courses.
Five-Year Double Degree (B.M. & B.A.)
Students in our Five-Year Double Degree Program complete a Bachelor of Music as well as the full liberal arts curriculum required for the Bachelor of Arts in a discipline outside of music. Students accepted into this program are eligible to receive a fifth year of merit-based scholarships and need-based financial assistance.
The School of Music offers a Minor in Music, by audition, to students in the College of Liberal Arts. Additionally, we offer a Minor in Jazz Studies available to students in our College of Liberal Arts and School of Music.
