395A: Lit & Theory:Adv Topics: Desire in Film

This course approaches cinema through the lens of one of its strongest motivations: desire. Though cinema is our central medium, there will be ample reading in this course. We will study theorists and critics who have contributed to film criticism's long allegiance to Freud's ideas (psychoanalysis) as well as those critics who have sought alternate lines of inquiry into sex, gender, and desire. How, we might ask, has the medium of cinema shaped cultural imaginaries and paradigms of sex, gender, and desire throughout the 20th and 21st centuries? Please note: the course includes provocative and some explicit materials. We will cast a critical and inquisitive lens on expressions and constructions of desire in the history of cinema.
