Object Of The Week- From the DePauw University Art Collection

By: Hayden DeBruler ‘17

Sitting Bull, a screen print by Andy Warhol, takes on a slightly different form than most of his well-known works, incorporating fine lines in the background. This calls into perspective the lineage of Sitting Bull himself, tied to the land even in his portrait, clouds on the horizon, plumes that mirror the wrinkles in his visage. He stares directly at the viewer, not content, but contained in his pursed lips, his arm, angled over his chest cutting the viewer off from his core. Lakota for a bison resting on its haunches, Sitting Bull observes the viewer, an intrusion to the stoic nature he protects, a gate to the land, crossed with green bars, popping against the warm exterior of the print, yellow feathers, his aura, his consciousness, a halo blooming with the crepuscular rays emerging from his clouds.
