183A: Dissecting the Scientific Conference Experience (off-campus)

Dissecting the scientific conference experience: An opportunity to listen to and engage with scientific scholars from the fields of Kinesiology and Health Science. This course is designed to lead students through an engaging, interactive professional scientific conference experience. As part of the course students will attend the American College of Sports Medicine's annual conference (ACSM). The ACSM annual conference draws over 6000 professionals from around the world to present and discuss scientific research (basic and applied) in the areas of Health Science, Kinesiology, and Human Performance. Assignments throughout the course are arranged to 1) expose students to the topics that will be presented during the conference, 2) practice critical readings of conference abstracts posted prior to attending the conference, 3) build a detailed, individualized itinerary of presentations and highlighted symposia to attend while at the conference, and 4) create an outline to guide and encourage verbal dialogue with those respective scholars while attending the conference to produce a diary documenting the student's experience. Upon return from the conference to DePauw's campus the class will spend time working in small groups to reflect on the overall experience, practice developing potential research studies of their own, and discuss what new academic and professional opportunities may exist for students after DePauw University. Topics typically discussed at the ACSM national conference include but are not limited to the list displayed below this course description. Students will be able to choose which topics to focus on while attending the conference. Please see the instructor Brian Wright in Kinesiology to discuss what other topics might exist in further detail. The class will meet Monday through Friday for a minimum of three hours. During attendance at the conference, work towards the class will easily meet three hours and may exceed four hours per day.
