PHILOSOPHY OF SEX & GENDER

PHIL 242A    Professor Dan Shannon    9:20 - 10:20 MWF

Traditional and contemporary theories on the nature of love, sex, and marriage will be discussed. We will examine Freudian, Marxian, and Existential views of sexual identity and the causes of repression and alienation. We will see if there truly is reason to believe in modern social repression as we read and discuss Michel Foucault's History of Sexuality. We will also consider arguments concerning feminism, pornography, and the nature of homosexuality. There will be several writing assignments, including two major papers; class participation will be extensive.
