Music Education

DePauw University is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), and the DePauw University Music Teacher Education Program is accredited by the Indiana State Board of Education. The Music Teacher Education Program is designed for the preparation of successful public school music teachers. The program leads to state certification to teach music in the P-12 public schools in Indiana. Two majors are available: an instrumental/general music emphasis and a choral/general music emphasis. To obtain certification, students must complete a semester of student teaching in an area elementary or secondary school.

Music education faculty members challenge students to develop their knowledge, skills, and dispositions to become accomplished musicians, scholars, communicators, advocates, pedagogues, and leaders. The coursework is comprehensive and practical in nature, allowing students to develop their musical knowledge and skills to their fullest potential. Throughout the duration of their academic career at DePauw, students will complete field experiences in area schools and will also participate in teaching experiences inside and outside of the campus classroom.

Our students’ achievements have been recognized throughout the state of Indiana.  Sixteen music education majors have been awarded the coveted “Outstanding Future Music Educator of the Year” award given annually by the Indiana Music Education Association.  Faculty members from every college and university music education program in the state can nominate students for this award. Our job placement rate is very high, with approximately 97% of our music education program completers securing teaching positions around the country.
