The Allen Challenge - FAQ

“Frequently Asked Questions” regarding the GOLD one-day giving challenge sponsored by Betty Allen '56 and Bob Allen.

Q:  If I’ve already made a gift since July 1, 2013 (i.e. Fiscal Year 2013-2014) and I make an additional gift on October 17, will my second gift put history on repeat?

A:  Yes!  All gifts to the Annual Fund made on October 17, 2013 will be matched 1:1 up to a total of $50,000--even  if  you're already a donor this fiscal year.

Q: Can I make a gift at 10 p.m. in California on October 17 to count towards the Allen Challenge?

A: No. Unfortunately the Allen Challenge ends at 11:59 p.m. EST time. To be safe, avoid any time complication by making your gift midday!

Q:  If I make a Tiger Club gift on October 17, will my gift count for The Allen Challenge?

A:  No.  Your Tiger Club gift will count towards the Tiger Club, but the challenge sponsors stipulated that only gifts made to the Annual Fund will be matched.

Q:  Can I make my gift with a check and still participate in the challenge?

A:  Yes! Try to get your check in the mail early and date it “October 17” so that it counts for the challenge.

Q:  Will my gift on October 17 count towards the GOLD Scholars program?

A:  Yes!  The GOLD Council will choose a GOLD Scholar every time graduates of the last decade raise $20,000 in unrestricted gifts to the Annual Fund.

Q:  If I’m having trouble making my gift online or prefer to give over the phone, who should I call?

A:  Call 800-446-5298 and speak to any member of DePauw’s Development team.

Q: When will we know the final results of the challenge?

A: Due to the receipt of checks in the mail and the verification process for each gift, it is unlikely that we will know the “final” results before Monday, October 21, 2013.

Q:  Why did Betty Allen ’56 and Bob Allen issue this challenge only to GOLD?

A:  “It is important to me that alumni get in the habit of contributing something ... even if it can be only a small amount at this time.” – Betty Allen ’56

Q:  Are DePauw's GOLD alumni awesome?

A:  Without a doubt.  The success of the Meeker Challenge in 2012 was noticed by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, which honored DePauw with the CASE District V Gold Award for "Best Annual Giving Program" in December.
