DePauw Performing Arts Series Welcomes Hubby Jenkins

October 28, 2022

Hubby Jenkins Fall 2022 PAS

On Wednesday, November 2 at 7:30pm, the DePauw Performing Arts Series will present  multi-instrumentalist and singer Hubby Jenkins in concert in Thompson Recital Hall in the Green Center for the Performing Arts. This show will be Jenkins’s third appearance in a DePauw venue, having performed live and in person as a member of the highly acclaimed Carolina Chocolate Drops in 2010, and virtually from his home in Brooklyn during the covid lockdown as part of the DePauw English Department’s 2021 symposium on the Great Migration.

Hubby Jenkins is a Grammy and Americana Award nominated singer and instrumentalist who plays fiddle, guitar, banjo and bones, performing traditional African American music like blues, oldtime and ragtime, as well as songs from older commercial sources such as minstrelsy and the early USA recording industry. Hubby is also a knowledgeable source of African American cultural history and oral traditions from the late eighteenth century through  the present.

In addition to the November 2 concert Jenkins will also visit DePauw classes, give a guest talk and music demonstration during the School of Music’s weekly Convocation Hour, and will will guide musicians and singers in a public shared song circle Thursday evening at 6:30pm at Music on the Square (M2), all as part of a three day residency. Like the on-campus Wednesday night concert in Thompson Hall, the Thursday night shared song circle at downtown Greencastle’s M2 (next door to Bridges restaurant) is free and open to both musicians and non-players alike.
