Jerry Smartt.jpgMay 30, 2007, Greencastle, Ind. - "When Dr. Jerry Smartt was valedictorian at Pike High School in 1992, he was one of several black scholars to receive an achievement award from the Indianapolis Professional Association. Fifteen years later, the Carmel neurologist is chairman of IPA's board," reports today's Indianapolis Star of the 1996 DePauw University graduate. (photo: Robert Scheer)

Carolyn Duffy Marsan writes, "Since its founding in 1985, IPA has recognized hundreds of black high school scholars at its annual achievement awards breakfast ... IPA also recognizes organizations that help at-risk youths in the Indianapolis area through its annual Youth Empowerment Breakfast in December. In addition, IPA hosts two networking events a year to help young black professionals make contacts and launch their careers."

"When you look at the IPA's mission, it's about networking, education and empowerment," Smartt tells the newspaper. "Through networking, we're able to establish relationships in the business community that foster our professionalism. Through education, we recognize the accomplishments and promote the success of our youth, who are the leaders of tomorrow. And through empowerment, we continue to lift ourselves up."
