CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Anderson Street Project

The Anderson Street Project is the first phase of Greencastle’s redevelopment plan through the Stellar Communities Grant, awarded to the city in the spring of 2011.  This Grant will provide the community of Greencastle, as well as DePauw University, a series of upgrades to streetscapes and infrastructures around the downtown district, drawing a closer connection between the campus and the community.

Anderson Street has been designed to enhance the historical value of the area, which has served as a connector corridor from DePauw University to the Eastern Enlargement District of Greencastle.  The main improvement on Anderson Street will be the new DePauw University entrance gate monument.   This entry will lead to the heart of the campus, and let visitors and guests know they have truly arrived at DePauw.  Other improvements will include new street lights and signage, brick sidewalks, and limestone retaining walls.

Construction of this project is now about 75-80% complete. Although it is difficult to see a finished product, there have been many developments along Anderson Street. Utility lines that were once poles are now underground, broken sidewalks have been replaced with brick pavers, and fifteen 20-foot Triumph Elm trees frame the street. Retaining walls are being built and the new gateway monument is beginning to take shape. In the next few weeks, the sidewalks will be completed, the road will be asphalted, and the gateway monument will begin to have finishes installed.

CURRENTLY IN DESIGN PHASE

Lilly Recreation Center Fitness Center Expansion

Phase 1 of the Lilly Recreation Center master plan consists of a two-story, 35,000-square-foot expansion at the northeast corner of the existing building. The expansion features a new entry, secure access via a control desk, a student lounge, and a new fitness center with adjacent locker rooms. Upon completion of the expansion, a renovation of 15,000 square feet of existing space will begin. The vacated, old fitness center will become multi-purpose rooms. The Kinesiology program will relocate its labs, classrooms, and offices by converting underutilized racquetball courts. The finishes of existing corridors will be upgraded.

In anticipation of the planned re-purposing of the current natatorium into a practice facility in Phase 3 of the master plan, a new roof structure to replace the existing sloped roof is being considered for Phase 1. If the new roof structure is approved, this work must be completed between April 1, 2013 and August 1, 2013, in order to not disrupt the use of the natatorium during the swimming season. The building expansion is scheduled to be complete in August 2014. The building renovation work will be complete by the end of 2014.

Currently, design work is being led by the architect Hastings+Chivetta. Schematic design was completed on September 28, 2012. Design development began on October 23, 2012. At the end of the request for proposal process, Wilhelm Construction of Indianapolis was selected as the Construction Manager.

Blackstock Resurfacing and New Multi-Purpose Venue

Phase 1 of the Athletic Campus master plan consists of a new synthetic turf and track in Blackstock Stadium, a new field throwing venue in the undeveloped western edge of the Athletic Campus, and development of new multi-purpose fields for lacrosse and soccer. Phase 1 also includes reconfiguration of parking lots associated with this work.

Currently, design work is being led by Hastings+Chivetta. Schematic design is about 50% complete. Soil borings were completed on the week of October 8, 2012. A soil engineering report, due late October 2012, is needed to complete schematic design.

The new synthetic turf and track in Blackstock Stadium is scheduled to be completed mid-summer 2013. The multi-purpose venue is scheduled to be complete in fall 2013.

CURRENTLY IN PLANNING PHASE

East College Lawn Restoration

This project has three phases of construction. The design process will begin this spring; Phase 1 of construction is slated to begin late spring 2013. Sidewalk realignments, tree plantings, landscape enhancements, and turf restoration will be the key elements of this project. Phase 1 will concentrate construction around East College, in order to complement what has already been done during the recent East College lighting project. Phases 2 and 3 will extend the restoration work to the areas around Holton Quad and the lawn space north of East College.

The University Dining Hall

Scope: The intent is to replace the current "Hub" in the Memorial Student Union with a centrally located dining hall to serve the approximately 1000 students who currently take some or all of their meals in University facilities.

Design Features:

Exterior

  • Represents the last major facility to be built in the traditional core of the nearly two-centuries old campus in the shadow of East College.

  • Will provide compelling dining views to East College Lawn to the north and Burkhardt Walk to the west

  • The building design, in tandem with the Union Building, will frame a new landscaped plaza to the east, that will visually connect East College to the Green Center for the Performing Arts.

  • The design/construction of the project will pursue LEED Silver certification.

Interior

  • The Grand Dining Hall, with vaulted ceilings accented by carefully selected light fixtures, provides a much-needed venue for larger, special University occasions (e.g., Alumni Reunion Weekend events).

  • The Faculty Club will provide discrete dining opportunities for faculty, guests, and student-faculty interaction. It will also serve as a potential location for Board of Trustees meetings.

  • Several Private Dining Rooms will provide a more intimate experience for smaller groups, such as classes.

  • The Servery area will be designed to prominently feature 8-10 serving stations that will provide participants with a wide variety of healthy menu options.

University Guest House

As a result of a gift, the house at 429 Anderson Street will be renovated to serve DePauw University as an official Guest House. An architectural firm has begun the design process. The main floor will serve as a reception space, while the second floor will include housing. To make the new entrance to DePauw as appealing as possible, the Guest House renovation may overlap into some of the surrounding spaces.

Center for Student Engagement

As a result of a gift, the Student Union Building will be re-purposed after the dining operation has relocated out of the space. The goal of the renovation will be to move many programs and services that directly impact the student experience into one central location in the Student Union Building. The next step in the process is to select an architectural firm to begin the design process.

Nature Park Connection Trails

The intent of this project is to make the Athletic Campus feel more connected to DePauw University Nature Park and the Prindle Institute of Ethics. Nature Park Trails C3 and C4 will be enhanced by improved earthwork, grading, and surfacing. Initial schematic design is currently underway, and the design development phase of this project could begin spring 2013.
