These awards are announced at the end of each academic year for use during the following year that the student attends DePauw.
Some departmental awards or upper-class prizes are made to students graduating from DePauw the year in which they are awarded. In these cases, federal regulations may require adjustments to the students existing financial aid awards in order to maintain compliance.
Indiana Artist/Craftsmen Talbot Street Art Fair Award
Established in honor of Richard Peeler, who taught ceramics for the DePauw Art Department, and his wife, Marj Peeler. Awarded to a an outstanding junior art student.
Meehan Memorial Award
Established in memory of Professor William Meehan and given annually to a senior art student who works in traditional mediums in non-traditional ways.
The Fritz Smith Memorial Art Award
Established in memory of Fritz Smith, a DePauw art student, who died in 1959. The award is given annually to an undergraduate student whose outstanding painting or drawing is selected for the University's permanent collection.
A. Reid Winsey Scholarship
Awarded annually in honor of A. Reid Winsey (Department Chair 1938-1970) to the outstanding first-year student to purchase art supplies the following year.
Vera May Knauer Farber Scholarship
Established by Vera May Knauer Farber '36 and is awarded to a studio art major who uses direct observation as a source for imagery.
Wylie-Condit Science Scholarship
Established by Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Condit to assist promising sophomores or juniors to further their studies in the natural sciences.
Albert E. Reynolds Outstanding Senior Award
Awarded to a senior biology major based on the student's scholarship and research potential.
John C. Frazier Memorial Prize for Botany/Microbiology
Dr. Frazier was a 1925 graduate of DePauw and created the award to recognize a senior biology major based on scholarship and research potential in botany and microbiology.
Truman G. Yuncker Endowed Merit Scholarship
Established for outstanding junior biology majors.
John Ricketts Prize
Established by alumni who were former students of Professor Ricketts. This award is given to a student who shows the highest achievement in physical chemistry.
Division of Analytical Chemistry Award
The award goes to a student showing ability, promise and interest in the area of analytical chemistry.
Percy L. Julian Scholarships
Mrs. Anna Julian established this award in memory of her distinguished husband, Dr. Percy L. Julian, scientist, civil rights activist, businessman, as well as an alumnus, trustee, and benefactor of DePauw. The awards allow talented students to pursue careers in chemistry, medicine and related fields.
Awesome Dawson Award
The Awesome Dawson Award recognizes the senior chemistry or biochemistry majors who attend 20 or more seminars during the junior and senior years.
Watkins Awards in Greek and Latin
Established by Georgia M. Watkins for the advancement of Greek and Latin studies and given annually to the outstanding beginning Greek/Latin students.
Stephen Gentry Award
Awarded to the junior most likely to contribute to the electronic media profession.
Margaret Noble Lee Speaking Scholarship
Awarded to recognize success in an extemporaneous speaking contest that is open to all DePauw students.
Established by Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Condit to assist promising sophomores or juniors to further their studies in computer science.
Randal L. Wilson Junior/Senior Award
Established by the family of Randal L. Wilson, a student at DePauw during the 1960's to recognize outstanding juniors and seniors in Economics.
Frank T. Carlton Award
Awarded to an outstanding senior economics major in honor of Frank T. Carlton, who taught at DePauw from 1919-1927.
Bruce Allen Long Scholarship
Awarded to an outstanding sophomore major in Economics and Management who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and leadership potential.
Dr. Robert H. '35 and Vera May Farber '36 Outstanding Senior in Teacher Education
Dr. Farber taught and served as Dean at DePauw. This prize is given to the outstanding graduating senior majoring in Education Studies.
Chad Kostel Memorial Award
The Chad Kostel Memorial Award is awarded to upper-class students memory of Chad Kostel, a former English student who had a career as a writer and editor. The award is made by the Financial Aid Office with recommendations from the English Department for students with a commitment to writing as a profession.
Elizabeth B. Powell Award
The Elizabeth B. Powell Award is given to a member of the junior class who exhibits outstanding ability in the area of written communication and usage of the English language with funds established in 1987 by friends and family of Mrs. Powell. This award is made without application by the English Department.
Judith Shakespeare Award
The Judith Shakespeare Award is given to a junior or senior English Literature major exceptionally gifted in literary interpretation. This award is made without application by the English Department.
Biggs-Steele College Writing Award
English 120/130 Awards are given to students in recognition of either 'greatest improvement' or 'greatest achievement' in writing in English 120 and English 130 classes. These awards are made without application by the English Department.
William G. Schoenoff Award
Established in memory of Mr. Schoenoff by his parents and is given annually to the senior class member who has most distinguished herself/himself in the study of literature.
Roy and Anna Kennedy in Creative Writing
Adam Kennedy '46 established this award in honor of his parents. It is given annually to the senior class member who has most distinguished herself/himself in creative writing and who shows great promise as an artist.
Walker Gilmer Prize
Awarded to a senior who is outstanding in literature honoring Professor Emeritus of English Walker Gilmer.
Wylie Condit Science Scholarship
The Wylie Condit Science Scholarship is awarded to promising students to further their studies in geology at DePauw with funds established by Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Condit.
E. R. "Rock" Smith Award
The E. R. "Rock" Smith Award is awarded to an outstanding student with funds established by the former students of Ernest "Rock" Smith in recognition of his excellence and dedication as a teacher. He was head of the Department of Geology from 1921 until 1947 when he retired to Ithaca, New York where he served as President of the Paleontological Research Institute until his death in 1952.
Hugh Richard Gault Award
The Hugh Richard Gault Award is awarded with funds established by Arabella B. Gault in honor of Dr. Gault, '36, who was a Rector Scholar at DePauw, active in science, civic, and school affairs, and department head at Lehigh University at the time of his death.
Joseph F. Gillespie Fellowship
Awarded to an outstanding senior health science student to help defray the expense of graduate/professional school.
William Wallace Carson History Scholarships
The William Wallace Carson History Scholarships are awarded to academically strong sophomore and junior history majors with funds established in 1968 by Mrs. Samuel H. Swint.
Albert J. Beveridge Fellowship
Established in honor of Senator Beveridge of Indiana to be given to outstanding seniors and recent graduates pursuing graduate programs in historical studies and research.
Sharon Hamilton Nolte Prize in Japanese Studies
The Sharon Hamilton Nolte Prize in Japanese Studies established in memory of Sharon Hamilton Nolte, a member of the Department of History 1984-87, and is awarded to a student having a GPA of 3.30 or higher and planning to study at a Japanese university during his or her undergraduate years.
Mary Smith Hamer Journalism Scholarship
The Mary Smith Hamer Journalism Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior woman who has excelled in journalistic endeavors and who demonstrates promise for a career in journalism in memory of Mary Smith Hamer, class of 1970.
DeWitt Wallace-Reader's Digest Print Journalism Award
The DeWitt Wallace-Reader's Digest Print Journalism Award is given to one or two juniors who have demonstrated a career interest in print journalism.
J. David Hogue '21 Journalism Scholarship
The J. David Hogue '21 Journalism Scholarship is given in memory of the distinguished editor and journalist to recognize honor students for their academic and journalistic accomplishments. The award was established by Mrs. J. David Hogue (Mildred Robinson '21) and Mrs. Harold Corneilsen (Margaret Ellen Hogue '56).
Wylie Condit Science Scholarship
The Wylie Condit Science Scholarship is awarded to promising students to further their studies in mathematics at DePauw with funds established by Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Condit.
Laurel H. and Esther L. Turk Spanish Scholarship Awards
Laurel H. and Esther L. Turk Spanish Scholarship Awards are given to sophomore or junior Spanish majors showing high academic achievement, leadership skills, and financial need as recommended by the Spanish language faculty.
Ralph F. Carl Senior French Award
Given annually to the outstanding senior major with the highest GPA in French.
G. Hans Grueninger German Award
The G. Hans Grueninger German Awards were established by friends and former students of Professor Grueninger at his retirement in 1968 to recognize high achievement by students in German Studies.
Merle Royse Walker Language Award
Established as a memorial to 1912 DePauw graduate, Merle Royse Walker, by his family and friends to recognize the outstanding senior in modern or classical languages.
The Presser Scholarship recognizes the outstanding junior music student with funds established by the Presser Foundation and Presser Music Publishing Company.
Leah Curnutt Prize
The Leah Curnutt Prize recognizes the outstanding student in music education program with funds established by Mildred Gardner, a School of Music alumna and life-long friend of Professor Leah Curnutt.
John and Esther Browning Memorial Prize
The John and Esther Browning Memorial Prize is awarded to an outstanding pianist or violinist completing the junior year.
Meghan Parker Memorial Prize
The Meghan Parker Memorial Prize is awarded to the outstanding vocalist completing the freshman year with funds established by her family and friends.
Mu Phi Epsilon
Mu Phi Epsilon recognizes outstanding students who are members of the DePauw Chapter of Mu Phi Epsilon. This is done by the Indianapolis Alumni Chapter.
O. H. Smith Scholarship
The O. H. Smith Scholarship is awarded to the junior major who has demonstrated exceptional ability and potential with funds established by friends and former students of O. H. Smith, a distinguished DePauw professor.
Austin D. Sprague Award
The Austin D. Sprague Award is awarded to a full-time junior physics major with demonstrable need and a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Wylie Condit Science Scholarship
The Wylie Condit Science Scholarship is awarded to promising students to further their studies in physics or astronomy at DePauw with funds established by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Condit.
Richard Watson Bunch Memorial Award
The Richard Watson Bunch Memorial Award is awarded to the outstanding junior political science major with funds established by Mrs. Richard W. bunch (Eugenia) in honor of her husband.
Stephen Charles Sellett Memorial Award
Awarded annually to the outstanding Political Science senior major. Established in 1971 by Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Sellett in honor of their son, Stephen Charles Sellett, a DePauw graduate who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1970.
Rex Rector Service Award
Given in memory of a former member of the psychology department to senior psychology majors who have shown outstanding achievement in the area of human service.
Kenneth S. Wagoner Research Award
Given in honor of an outstanding researcher and scholar, this award goes to senior psychology majors who have shown the highest research potential and dedication to experimentation as the surest road to an expanding and dependable structure of knowledge.
Theodore Englehart Scholarship
Established in honor of Theodore Englehart to senior majors in psychology.
Paul C. Glick Award
Established by Paul C. Glick, Class of 1933, professor emeritus at Arizona State, past president of the Population Association of America and for many years Senior Demographer of the U. S. Bureau of Census. This award is given annually to a senior who has demonstrated academic excellence in the Sociology and Anthropology Department.
