Twins Who Are All-State Scholars and Basketball Standouts Prepare for DePauw

June 15, 2004

June 15, 2004, Greencastle, Ind. - "Although Gretchen and Gwen Haehl are fraternal twins, their high school careers -- and college plans -- are nearly identical," begins an article in today's Indianapolis Star. "Gretchen is Shelbyville [Indiana] High School's valedictorian and class president; Gwen is salutatorian and class vice president ... Both received all-state academic honors. Gretchen will continue her basketball career at DePauw University in Greencastle. Gwen also will study at DePauw. And can you believe it? Both will focus on economics."

Gretchen Haehl tells the newspaper, "I really wanted to play basketball somewhere, and I really liked the campus and the academic atmosphere there." Jason Thomas writes, "The valedictorian would like to study abroad, but the basketball season could interfere with an internship program. Gwen is looking forward to the media fellows program, in which students work with the college's radio and television stations, in addition to the newspaper, with goals to receive internships. She's wavering between a career in business or communications. 'Hopefully, during my junior year, I'll get a really good internship,' she said."

The article notes that, besides the accolades they earned for their scholarship, both of the young women won statewide honors for basketball. The Haels also played soccer and were members of the Spanish Club, Students Against Destructive Decisions and National Honor Society. You can read the complete news story by clicking here.
