DePauw's rally falls short in 59-50 loss to Wisconsin-Platteville

DePauw's four-game win streak came to an end with a 59-50 loss to Wisconsin-Platteville in each team's first game at the Clarke College Holiday Tournament in Dubuque, Iowa. The Tigers dropped to 5-3 on the season, while Platteville evened its mark at 4-4.
The Tigers jumped out to a 13-8 lead after Jon Owens hit a jumper with 14:40 left in the first half, but the Pioneers' Brad Reitzner hit two buckets and a three-pointer in a 1:07 span to put Platteville ahead, 15-13.
DePauw's Reid Sakel's converted a three-point play with 5:59 left in the first to tie the contest at 21-21, but the Pioneers outscored the Tigers 12-0 over the remainder of the half including a half-court buzzer beater by Reitzner to take a 33-21 halftime lead. DePauw missed its last seven field goal tries of the half.
Platteville opened the second half by scoring the first five points to take a 38-21 lead, but the Tigers went on an 11-3 run to close the margin to single digits at 41-32 with 12:49 remaining. The Pioneers pushed the margin back to 10 at 44-34 with just under nine minutes remaining before Joey Hanger's three-pointer at the 2:32 mark capped a 16-8 stretch to make it 52-48.
Robert Davis was called for an offensive foul with 1:24 remaining and a subsequent technical foul. Platteville converted both free throws and then two more with 52 seconds left to extend the margin to seven. The Pioneers then knocked down three free throws the rest of the way to seal the win.
Sakel paced DePauw with 13, while Owens added 11. Alex Stewart, DePauw's leading scorer on the season, was held to a season-low three points and attempted only four field goals in 20 minutes. Reitzner led all scorers with 22 with LeVon Crawford adding 12.
The Pioneers held a commanding 35-23 advantage on the boards and hauled down 16 on the offensive glass, while the Tigers grabbed just three offensive rebounds. Mark Gossens led Platteville with nine boards with Owens and Stewart each hauling down six for DePauw.
DePauw shot 46 percent from the floor and limited the Pioneers to just 38 percent shooting, but the Tigers attemped 14 fewer shots in the contest.
DePauw moves to the consolation bracket where they will face Barat College on Monday, December 29 at 3:45 p.m. CST. Barat lost its first game to Cardinal Stritch, 102-95. Monday's WGRE broadcast will be available here.
