Spud Dick 2006.jpgMarch 24, 2006, Greencastle, Ind. - "Lawrence Central High School quarterback Spud Dick's size has never kept him from putting up big numbers, and the 5-foot-10 senior plans to take that trait to DePauw University and continue his career," writes Nat Newell in today's Indianapolis Star. "Dick was All-Conference Indiana and All-County, was the quarterback on the Indianapolis Star's All-North team and named to the Indiana Football Coaches Association Academic All-State team. He led an experienced team to an 11-1 mark as a junior, then set school records for pass attempts (301), completions (175) and yardage (2,543) last season, breaking marks that had stood since 1973. He also threw 22 touchdown passes."

The article also points out, "Dick took an official visit to the Greencastle campus, then returned to get more information on an honors program before committing this month. He has been awarded a Holton Scholarship and is a candidate for the school's Management Fellows Program." Dick plans to major in economics.

"When I was younger, (doubts about my abilities due to my size) got to me a lot, but it's less and less (as I get older)," Spud Dick Action.jpgSpud Dick tells the newspaper. "My height was an issue (for bigger schools), but I'll be in competition for the job (at DePauw as a freshman)."

"The Tigers, who were 7-2 last season, run a balanced pro-style offense out of the I-formation, similar to Lawrence Central's scheme," adds Newell. "Starting quarterback Ross Wiethoff was a senior, and Dick will compete with junior-to-be Abe Winkle, who threw seven passes as a reserve last season, for the starting position."
