ron_gillum.jpgMay 20, 2010, Greencastle, Ind. — Ron Gillum, retired physician and 1960 graduate of DePauw University, will be inducted tonight into the Wall of Fame at Danville (Illinois) High School.  "I'm not really certain now why they chose me," Dr. Gillum tells the Danville Commercial-News. "It's an honor to the entire Class of 1956."

Gillum rose "to the top of the medical field as a pathologist," writes Mike Helenthal. "After suffering a bout with measles in the third grade and getting regular visits from a 'house call' doctor, he decided his path and never wavered. 'I watched him every day and thought, ‘He really helps people.' ' He is since credited with writing 30 medical journal articles and serving as chief of clinical pathology labs at University Hospitals, Oklahoma Children's Memorial Hospital and the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in Oklahoma City. He has trained physicians, completed 125 accredited lab inspections and served on numerous local, state and national medical associations."

The text notes, "After serving as DHS class president and as the editor of the school newspaper, Gillum worked his way through DePauw University with a variety of jobs and scholarships."Ron Gillum 2010sm.jpg

Dr. Gillum's picture will hang alongside Dick Van Dyke and others who have been honored by their alma mater.

"He's an ‘American Dream' dream type of guy," says District 118 Superintendent Mark Denman. "He's a great role model to put out in front of our students."
